Public spaces in the central area of cities in the context of post-industrial areas on the river banks are a relatively new topic in connection with the social development of the understanding of the river and its importance in the framework of the development of the contemporary city. The original shape of the river banks was, with some exceptions, purely utilitarian. Mills, back tracts of houses, and agricultural plots were concentrated around the rivers in the surrounding of human settlements. The river was used for sand mining, fishing, washing clothes, icebreakers and rowers. The river was part of the city's fortifications, so it had to be crossed on the way to the city. In connection with this, the first buildings were created that were tied to the river and its banks. These were the first fords, bridges and gateways. It was here that the first inns were built, which gave rise to the future suburbs. They were built at a time when the Gothic form of the city was overcome and the defense system of the walls gradually began to break outwards. At the time of the industrial revolution, production areas were established, often also near rivers, due to transport links or the need to pump water as a production force or as a source of raw materials. At the beginning of the 20th century, a new representative embankment was built around the river in close contact with the original historical core of the city. The embankment was spread over newly created plots of land regulated by the river flow. In the course of the 20th century, the city was definitively connected through the river, and the production areas, which gradually lost their original use, thus became part of the wider center. In today's situation, when former post-industrial buildings are located within walking distance of the historic core of the city, on the banks of the river and, moreover, with often very well-preserved building structures (with variable possibilities for further use), we perceive such territory as very lucrative with a high potential for next transformation. The integration of such areas into the already existing urban structure, thanks to their location by the river, takes place through public spaces. The banks of the rivers are created by so-called transitional areas, which help the connection between the existing urban structure and the natural elements of the river (the river as the blue axis of the city wants to be seen and perceived by all senses) in the spirit of sustainable development with regard to the development of cities inwards and on the assumption of the creation of high-quality urban greenery. In addition to the aspect of urban contexts, the revitalization process of similar locations also includes the aspect of new functional use and the protection of the legacy of industrial heritage as an important part of the construction and social history of cities. Last but not least, in connection with the topic being addressed, it is necessary to pay attention to the possibilities of initiating temporary or permanent changes in similar areas. Possible development strategies are described on the basis of seven selected locations in the city of Pilsen, which is a good example in the context of the development of public spaces along riverbanks, thanks to the so-called activities from bottum-up, for example through the project Festival Náplavka k světu., which was, among other things, the inspiration for writing this thesis.
