Abstract
This thesis deals with surface modification of silicon by the covalent attachment of organic molecules. The theoretical part deals with description of general and semiconductor properties of silicon, differences between Si(100) and Si(111) surfaces and the production of silicon wafer, which is the starting material for treatments. Attention is given to chemical reactions enabling attachment of organic molecules on silicon surface, their mechanism and reaction conditions. The experimental part focuses on preparation of alkyl layers in three steps involving etching, chlorination and subsequently Grignard reaction. Samples were analysed by FT-IR.
