In recent years, there has been a large increase in passenger and public transport in cities. The increase in traffic flow results in an increased risk of traffic accidents. Increasing demands are being placed on tram manufacturers and operators to ensure the safety of vehicles in the event of an accident. Currently the principle of partner protection is being promoted in the design of road vehicles, whereby the vehicle´s safety features not only protect the passengers inside the vehicle, but also the passengers of the collision vehicle. In the case of rail vehicles, namely trams, the area of partner protection is only addressed in the event of a collision with pedestrians. However, the consequences of real accidents between trams and motor vehicles in recent years clearly indicate that this principle shall also be addressed in tram and car accidents. In the first part of this dissertation thesis, the issue of vehicle accidents is comprehensively described with regard to the legislative requirements for passive safety and their demonstration when vehicles are approved for use. The second part of this dissertation is devoted to the problem of the consequences of tram and car accidents and the design of tram fronts with regard to reducing the consequences of accidents on cars.
