This work deals with the estimation of parameters of selected mathematical models described by systems of ordinary and partial differential equations from data. To calculate the gradient we use in the optimization of the loss function, we present derivation of the adjoint equation that we will derive in this paper for each model. For comparison, we further compare this method with the direct calculation of the gradient using the finite difference method. We solve the resulting equations using numerical methods implemented in C++. Finally, we perform a computational study in which we compare the two methods and their performance on individual models. Except for the case of calculating the gradient using the adjoint equation for the Lorenz model we have shown that the parameters of the models can be estimated using these methods.
