The aim of this bachelor thesis is to investigate for the first time the amplitudes of geomagnetically induced currents in the electric power grid in the Czech Republic. It is generally believed that these currents lead to increased failure rates of components of the power grid. These effect are well proven for countries at higher latitudes - Scandinavia, USA, Canada, South Africa, etc., where the amplitudes reache up to hundreds of amperes during great solar storms. In the central Europe, such large values of GICs are not expected, but even GICs that are of lower amplitudes can cumulatively cause an increased failure rate. The investigator of this thesis will model the time evolution of GICs for a chosen time period of increased solar activity and for selected segments of the power grid. This thesis will serve for a realistic estimate of GIC hazard for the Czech power grid.
