This thesis focuses on the energy optimization of flow shop type manufacturing cells. We consider cells consisting of m machines and a material handling robot producing one type of a part. The robot transfers parts between machines and ensures machines loads and unloads. We consider the cyclic scheduling of the robot moves with the objective of minimizing the energy consumption. We develop a mixed integer linear programming formulation (MILP) of the problem. We describe a verification procedure to evaluate the correctness of the MILP formulation. We also develop a heuristic approach based on genetic algorithm for this NP-hard problem. The result of this thesis indicates that a common flow shop type manufacturing cells can be effectively optimized by the exact algorithm. However, larger robotic cells with more machines can achieve a near-optimal solution by the heuristic approach in a reasonable time. The main contribution of the thesis is a different objective function compared to other studies that deal with the optimization of the flow shop type manufacturing cells.
