The radon and thoron progeny concentrations in the air are determined using the one grab sampling method from the filter. Semiconductor alpha spectrometry and scintillation gamma spectrometry using a 5"x5" NaI(Tl) detector were used for the measurement of the activity on the filter. The measurement results were compared with values obtained with the continuous REP monitor. The filter efficiency and the effect of self-absorption on the overall detection efficiency of the system are important parameters for the evaluation of radon and thoron concentrations. Experiments have been carried out which have contributed to a better understanding of the properties of membrane filters. The last part of the thesis deals with the optimalization of the measurement using the scintillation detector NaI(Tl).
