The aim of the work is to become acquainted with and mathematically describe one of the hypothetically most serious accidents of a high-pressure nuclear reactor. The introduction briefly describes a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA), associated with the expansion of zirconium-based material in fuel rods. This phenomenon is described by the conservation laws of the relevant quantities in the form of partial differential equations. To examine these balances, the work summarizes the basic mathematical tools from the fields of mathematical analysis, linear algebra, and numerical methods. These serve to analyze the issues of heat conduction and irreversible deformations in the zirconium material and to interconnect these two areas.
