Cosmic rays have been the subject of research since their discovery in the early twentieth century, yet many areas still remain unexplored. At the highest energies, the measurement of their properties becomes increasingly difficult due to their very low flux. These ultra-high energy cosmic rays (with energies above 1018 eV) are observed and studied at the largest experimental facility built for cosmic-ray detection, the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina. Coming from outer space, once the particles reach the Earth's atmosphere they collide and interact with the atomic nuclei in the upper layers of the atmosphere and create subsequent cascades of secondary particles. To explain the development of these extensive air showers, various models have been introduced to describe their propagation and development in the atmosphere. This thesis aims to test the validity of the Superposition model for ultra-high energy cosmic rays by analyzing the results of simulations and quantifying the differences between the theoretical predictions and results of detailed Monte Carlo simulations.
