The aim of this work was the characterization of adhesion performance of novel calcium-phosphate bone cement (CPC) and its various material modifications to the surface of metal endoprostheses. Adhesion was evaluated by measuring adhesion by means of the three-point bending method. Tested samples were pure CPC, CPC with antibiotics (ANT), CPC with polycaprolactone (PLA) fibers and CPC with a combination of dopamine and sodium iodate, which were all compared with a control cement based on polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). The material of the endoprosthesis was represented by a titanium alloy Ti6Al4V with two different surfaces – a sandblasted surface and a surface with a plasma-coated hydroxyapatite (HA) layer. It was concluded that PMMA achieves significantly higher adhesion than the samples with CPC. The addition of ANT or dopamine does not affect the adhesion of the cement, while the addition of PLA fibers leads to a significantly higher adhesion of the cement. Moreover, it was proven that cements on a substrate with an HA layer have a higher adhesion than on a substrate with a sandblasted surface. An additional goal of this work was to compare two different methods utilized for determining the work of adhesive forces.
