This thesis work is focused on the construction of the mathematical model and design methodology of a fluid pressure sensor sensing element for automotive applications, the ceramic flexible membranes are widely applied for oil pressure sensing, coolant circuits for electric vehicles and hydraulic transmission systems. In this case the fluid pressure sensor consists in a flexible ceramic membrane (AL2O3 96%), made of Alumina, the strains over the membrane are transduced into an electrical signal by means of a piezoresistive screen printed Wheatstone bridge. This thesis contains the industrial methodology for the design of such product, and it is organized in three main parts. The first is the compilation of the theoretical knowledge of the fluid pressure sensors currently available in the market, the principles of measurement, the ceramic flexible substrates basis and the related process of fabrication along with the Wheatstone bridge application for these purposes. The second part is a benchmark study and market analysis that supports the development of this project, this study presents the consideration of all the possible applications for the envisaged product, proposes a forecast of the part volumes for the next decade and finishes by the proposal of a set of initial requirements for the development of the sensing element, based on the market needs and the current customer’s requirements. The third part, the theoretical base for the new absolute fluid pressure sensor is built, a mathematical model the sensing element is obtained, coded into a tool for the dimensioning process, the validation of the model is obtained by comparison with similar products and to go further a variation of such model is proposed in order to estimate the precision of the sensing element as a function of the position of the piezoresistive ink printed gauges. These two models are the heart of this thesis, together they were used to build the know-how of the flexible membrane sensing elements, and their implementation resulted in the calculation of a new line of three FPS product based on the technology, and the technical specification of their prototypes.
