The Dissertation Thesis describes the problem of refraction that introduces a measurable and significant error into the geodetic measurements. In particular, it addresses its vertical component that manifests itself during measurements of elevations. The Thesis and the entire research focus on the measurement of temperature and its vertical gradient which is significant for the geodetic refraction. In the first part, the Author describes the process of selection of temperature sensors, data logging devices, the design of shielding and insulation structure for sensors. The Thesis also contains a detailed description of various possible calculations of the refraction effect according to temperature (and the temperature gradient) and their comparison. The most extensive part of the Thesis pursues the measurements and calculated experiments already made; these were designed to research the temperature conditions prevailing at the ground atmospheric level in which the engineering geodetic measurements take place. These experiments also verify, reject, or correct some of the assumptions that are applied during refraction corrections in geodesy (e.g., the assumption of vertical temperature stratification or size and stability of vertical gradient). In the last part of the Thesis, the experiments are presented that focus on practical verification of calculation and measurement procedures for suppressing the influence of refraction on geodetic measurements listed above. Author hereby presents his newly designed difference method, describes it in theory, applies and then verifies it through experiments.
