During a hypothetical severe accident at a nuclear power plant, irreversible damage occurs to the reactor's active zone. This degradation consists of several phases: heating, mechanical damage, and melting of nuclear fuel, gradual collapse of a significant portion of the reactor's core components into the lower plenum, and the formation of a debris bed and molten material at the bottom of the reactor pressure vessel (RPV). In the absence of external cooling of the RPV, its bottom inevitably melts, and the molten material/debris is expelled into the concrete shaft. Conversely, when applying the In-Vessel Melt Retention with External Reactor Vessel Cooling (IVMR-ERVC) strategy, the residual heat and heat generated by chemical reactions inside the RPV are transferred through its outer surface to the water in the flooded reactor cavity. The success of implementing this strategy is determined by sufficient heat removal capacity and a margin to the boiling crisis.
