This bachelor thesis deals with the statistical analysis of visual properties of materials (specifically wood veneers). The research part of the thesis compared different forms of material representations and machine learning methods for capturing visual characteristics of materials. In the practical part, suitable statistics that can be computed from the digital representation of the material were proposed and analyzed. Subsequently, the proposed statistics were successfully mapped to human perception of material properties using ridge regression. The selected statistics were then used to find the visually relevant part of the data of the digital representation of the material. A practical application of this procedure is then to compress the BTF material data to only the visually relevant part. The resulting compressed representation was evaluated using three different methods, and in all of them the compression was found to sufficiently preserve the visual properties of the material.
