During the implantation of intra-cerebral electrodes, conflicts between anchoring bolts and caps which secure the electrodes in the skull may occur. Additionally, bolts and caps cannot be visualized during the trajectory planning of the electrodes. The aim of this work is to automatically detect conflicts, find the optimal size of the tolerance field between the electrodes and bolts, and create a three-dimensional (3D) model of the anchoring bolts and caps for a clear visualization of the implantation plan. Implantation plans of 36 patients who underwent intracranial electrode exploration at the Motol University Hospital were analyzed. An algorithm was developed to generate a 3D model of bolts and caps. Based on the planned trajectories of the electrodes, the algorithm places the models in space in order to display positions of anchoring bolts and caps before the actual implantation. Simultaneously, an algorithm was created to identify collisions between bolts, caps, and electrodes, given a specified size of the tolerance field, using the coordinates of the planned trajectories. The developed algorithms allow for a clear visualization of the planned trajectories with 3D models of bolts and caps and indicate areas where conflicts occur. The size of the tolerance field for conflict identification was statistically determined to have a value of 2,1 mm. These algorithms rely only on the coordinates of the planned trajectories and are suitable as auxiliary tools in creating a plan for the implantation of intracerebral electrodes.
