This master thesis deals with the function of the combustion chamber in the internal combustion engines, especially the diesel engines with the option of dual-fuel operation, and possibilities of its optimization. Its theoretical part consists of the research focused on existing forms of combustion chambers and the approaches of their design, in the practical part the author pursues to apply the mentioned knowledge to a research device, which is included in the equipment of the Centre of Vehicles for Sustainable Mobility in Roztoky near Prague (Czechia). The modification proposal involves the alteration of the piston bowl shape and partial adjustments in the construction of the single-cylinder research engine. Subsequent experimental measurement of the suggested solution intended to consider its benefits is represented by the 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation in the FIRE software.
