In today's climate of ever increasing demands on energy efficiency in buildings, historical windows face pressures which frequently lead to their destruction and replacement on an unprecedented scale. This comes as especially harmful to the architectural heritage of Modernism, where windows serve as unique carriers of both the technological progress embodied in the movement as well as the fragile aesthetic of many Modernist buildings. The goal of the paper is to examine the thermal properties of common type Modernist windows and evaluate adaptations which aim to improve them. To this end, we utilized computer modelling and calculations in combination with thermal imaging. Regarding the first goal, we confirmed the problematic reputation of steel windows. Interestingly, we found no significant difference between the performance of traditional double and Modernist adjoined casement windows, a fact that supports some progressive voices from the interwar era speaking in favor of adjoined windows. Regarding the second goal, the results showed that draught-proofing and replacing original glass with low U-value double glazing are effective methods to improve the thermal resistance of historic windows, by up to 60% in our case. Considering all factors, the optimal approach was shown to be replacing the outer glazing of original windows. Our paper confirmed the conclusions of previous research on this topic and expanded upon it with further cases and details.
