Transuranic elements have become widespread in the environment over the last seventy years due to human nuclear activity. This paper is focused on the determination of americium in the environmental samples, where its activities are usually lower than the detection level of the common methods, and so the determination itself must be preceded by methods of concentration and isolation from a large number of inactive components and potential interferences. The theoretical part of the paper summarizes the separation procedures suitable for americium, which include, for example, precipitation, the use of ion exchangers and extraction chromatography. A large number of analytical methods have been developed for the determination of transuranic elements, where accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is one of the most sensitive methods suitable for the determination of 241Am. In the experimental part of the work, there is described a developed procedure for preparation of fluoride matrices for AMS measurements as a final step following the testing of separation procedures for americium by extraction chromatography using DGA Resin and TODGA-PAN materials. Methods for concentration of americium from aqueous solutions using a Dowex anion exchanger in the CO32- cycle and the co-precipitation with hydrated titanium oxide are also used.
