S prudkým růstem automobilismu v prvních třech desetiletích dvacátého století bezprostředně souvisí i rozvoj služeb motoristům. Dosud relativně křehký a poruchový automobil vyžadoval mimořádnou a vysoce komplexní péči. Té se mu dostalo především v hromadných garážích, které nabízely nejenom uskladnění vozu, ale i jeho údržbu, čištění, půjčovnu a prodej doplňků, možnost pronajmutí řidiče nebo absolvování autoškoly apod. Text mapuje na průřezu vybraných českých příkladů vývoj technologického i výtvarného řešení hromadné garáže jako specifického stavebního typu (od prvních, rozměry spíše skromných unikátů z počátku století až po vyspělé velkogaráže třicátých let).
The enormous spread of the automobile and the expansion of motoring in the first three decades of the 20th century also directly influenced the development of services for motorists. Automobiles were at that time still fragile and broke down easily, so they required extraordinary and very complex care. They received this care at mass garages, which served not just as a place to park the car, but also as a site where automobiles could obtain maintenance and be washed, as a rental depot, as a place to purchase automobile accessories, and where it was also possible to hire a driver or even learn how to drive. Using a selection of Czech examples this text maps the development of technological and architectural designs created for such mass garages as a specific type of building (from the first such garages at the start of the century, small in size and rare, to the advanced mass garages of the 1930s).
