Hotelový, festivalový a bazénový soubor Thermal v Karlových Varech patří k proslulým ikonickým budovám české moderní architektury. Vznikl na základě vítězného soutěžního návrhu podle projektu manželů Machoninových na místě historizující a secesní zástavby z přelomu 19. a 20. století. Přestože se jedná o bezesporu vynikající architektonické dílo, navíc koncepčně jednotné v celé škále rovin od řešení veřejného prostoru až po vybavení interiérů, dodnes vyvolává značně rozporuplné reakce. Průzkum FA ČVUT v letech 2013-2014 zmapoval nejenom vývoj projektu a realizovanou podobu, ale i pozdější zásahy a osudy, které unikátní soubor zásadně proměnily a formují jeho dnešní stav. Vyhodnocení však přináší i mnohem širší, klíčové otázky s obecnějšími přesahy k problematice celospolečenského pohledu na poválečnou architekturu a k možnostem a limitům jejího uchování a péče o ní.

Thermal in Karlovy Vary, the extensive complex of hotel, festival and swimming pool, is one of the most famous, iconic buildings of Czech modern architecture. The concept was based on the winning competition project designed by the spouses Machonin for the plot, released after demolition of historicist and Art Nouveau buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries. Although it is undoubtedly an excellent architectural work, moreover conceptually coherent from the urban planning, through the buildings itself, to interiors, it still evokes quite contradictory reactions. Survey drawn up by FA CTU in 2013-2014 mapped not only the history and development of the project and the final form of buildings, but although later interventions and changes, that irreversibly diluted the strong original concept and formed contemporary state. However, the evaluation also brings a much wider key issues overlap with the more general society-wide perspective on the issue of post-war architecture and the possibilities and limits of its preservation and care.
