The plans for the realization of the reservoir in the Mělčany profile (in the Czech Republic) have existed since the 1920s. The paper introduces the history and development of the water management concept of the reservoir, which is currently being prepared as a dry reservoir. The motivation for a significant increasing of the retention function was the flood in 1997 and, in particular the catastrophic flood in 1998, which caused extensive material damages and a loss of human lives. The technical design of the dam and functional structures is currently being prepared by the Sweco Hydroprojekt (JSC) at the stage of the construction permit documentation. The conception of the combined hydraulic structure was adapted to the requirement for migration throughput of water organisms and represents a unique technical solution. For this reason, at the beginning of 2018, the Faculty of Civil Engineering CTU in Prague completed a detailed hydraulic research on a physical model. It was focused on verifying and optimizing the hydraulic function of a combined structure and stilling basin; assessing the capacity during the flood wave passing; assessment of layout of functional objects and other tasks from the viewpoint of the optimal operating regime of the waterwork.eng
