Abstract
The subject is a heavily corroded wrought iron member, belonging to an old railway bridge over the river Vltava in Prague, Czech Republic. Through finite element modeling the member is strengthened with a sheet of an iron-based shape memory alloy, fastened with powder actuated nails. The numerical model is described, and its conception, its difficulties and uncertainties. Exploiting the shape memory effect, a recovery stress is generated, exerting a compressive response stress in the bridge member. The history of the bridge is briefly described. Three magnitudes of recovery stress, 161, 328, and 430 MPa, dependent on the activation temperature are evaluated and compared to the base model. The effect of the intervention is examined in fatigue loading through constant life diagram and modified nominal stress method, and in the ultimate limit state. The 161 MPa recovery stress model is shown to be insufficient for fatigue failure and the 430 MPa recovery stress model is shown to be insufficient in the ultimate limit state. Thus the 328 MPa recovery stress, generated at 160 °C, is the most suitable out of the three. Because of the restrictions imposed on the world due to Covid-19 no experiments were able to be carried out to verify the results.
