Abstract
The main aim of this work was to analyze the relation between the change in the intensity of the reflected signal and the change in temperature at the point of the reflection. These findings could in the future enable non-invasive temperature measurement of human body during microwave hyperthermia using ultrawideband radar. Two numerical models of locally heated muscle tissue were created in electromagnetic field simulator Sim4Life. The first numerical model was simplified, and it proved the correct setting of simulations. The second numerical model represented the real situation in hyperthermia treatment. Simulations with maximum temperatures falling within the normal temperature range of hyperthermia treatment: 41 °C, 43 °C and 45 °C, were created for both numerical models. Two broadband antennas were attached to one side of the model. The transmitting antenna Tx emitted a pulse in the 1-6 GHz frequency band, and the receiving antenna Rx then received the reflected signal. For both numerical models, three points in the graph of signal intensity changes were selected. For each point, the relation between the change in the intensity of the reflected signal and the change in temperature was analyzed. Regarding the analyzed results, the investigated dependence was linear with a direct proportion in all of the selected points except one. Subsequently, an experiment of local heating of muscle tissue was proposed and a special container was designed for it. The special container was made on 3D printer so that it could be used for the real measurement of the proposed experiment. The results of the simulations confirmed the previously formulated assumption of the linear dependence of the change in the intensity of the reflected signal on the temperature change at the point of reflection. In the future, it would be appropriate to realize the designed experiment for a deeper analysis of the change in the intensity of the reflected signal as a function of temperature.
