Abstract

The geometric algebra was introduced by W. K. Clifford in the nineteenth century. Whiff of its use can be seen in the quantum theory of 1920s, namely in the form of Pauli matrices and Dirac γ matrices. In the second half of the twentieth century D. Hestenes gave these algebraic objects concrete geometric meaning. In this thesis we aim to intuitively present multivectors and Clifford's geometric product and interpret their geometric significance. Furthermore, we introduce geometric calculus of multivector-valued functions. In the last two chapters we focus on applications of geometric product to the rigid body problem and the description of geometry of manifolds embedded in Euclidean spaces. In the process we introduce the shape operator, which is very well suited for the description of parallel transport and curvature.
