Abstract

This Master's thesis deals with analysis of digitized film records in order to get the estimation of its optimal resolution. That is the minimal resolution, which film can be scanned at, without loosing its image quality. At first the information capacity of film material and factors, that causes its degradation are discussed. Then the characteristics of film grain digital signal are described and used to determine the minimal sampling frequency, which will preserve the tiny structure of grain. Because the image quality distortion, that enables the reduction of resolution, acts as blur, the sharpness metrics are employed here to estimate the optimal image resolution. And the possibility of the image information content measurement by entropy is also considered here. All methods designed in this work were implemented in MATLAB together with comparison of their efficiency.
