Abstract
Ruthenium, palladium and rhodium are classified as critical and strategic raw materials due to their limited natural occurance and increasing demand within the European Union. Recycling these metals from spent nuclear fuel is considered a promising secondary source. In this context, solvent extraction appears to be a suitable method for their selective recovery, where a detailed understanding of thermodynamic and kinetic parameters is essential for the efficient development and implementation of the process. This bachelor thesis focuses on the extraction of Ru, Pd, and Rh from nitrate solutions using tributyl phosphate (TBP) in combination with organic diluents chloroform, cyclohexanone, cyclohexanone with DMDOHEMA, and kerosene. Experimental results showed that Pd extraction was the most efficient across all tested systems, Ru extraction was less effective, and Rh was mostly below the detection limit. Thermodynamic parameters determined for the TBP : kerosene system in a 3:7 volume ratio indicated that the extraction of Ru and Pd is an exothermic process accompanied by a decrease in entropy. These findings may contribute to the future recycling of innovative nitride-based nuclear fuels, which are being developed for application in Generation IV nuclear reactors.
