This doctoral thesis deals with an analysis and design of possible improvements in some methods of altitude measurement. The goal of these improvements is to design an Enhanced Electronic System for Altitude Measurement which – in comparison with the existing systems – could secure achievement of better quality of measurement and reduction of realization costs. This might lead to wider usage of these electronic systems, especially in the category of General Aviation airplanes, where these systems would provide more accurate information about the course of flight to these aircraft than the existing systems. This was also the main motivation for the choice of the doctoral thesis topic. After the initial theoretical analysis of the problems being solved herein, the first section of this doctoral thesis deals especially with a possible improvement of the qualities of measurement systems based on the barometric principle of altitude measurement. The improvement is achieved by innovative usage of differential pressure sensors for measurement of the value of air pressure on which the barometric principle is based. Further on, the possibility of correction of the International Standard Atmosphere (ISA) model based on the state of the real atmosphere is considered. This brings a possibility to use the barometric principle, which uses the ISA model to recalculate the value of pressure to the value of height, in applications where it used to be problematic. Further on in the thesis the design of the Enhanced System for Altitude Measurement based on all the available knowledge is described. This system is based on the differential pressure sensor and uses barometric principle with a corrected ISA model. Also the principle of utilization of the fusion of values measured in the individual parts of the system originally designed only for some auxiliary operations is outlined here as it may lead to further improvement of the overall quality of measurement by the designed system. At the end of the thesis an experimental realization of the designed system is described together with verification of its function both in laboratory condition and during a real flight. The thesis is concluded by a summary of the fulfilled goals of the thesis and the achieved performance results of the experimental realization of the designed system.
