The topic of this thesis is modelling of defects in vinyl disc records and their classification. The aim is to create models of the basic types of the defects and propose and implement system for automatic classification of the defects in MATLAB programming environment. The approach for modelling and classification of the defect types is based on their characteristic sound attributes. The classification based on found attributes is performed with k-nearest neighbors (KNN) classification algorithm. The algorithm is tested on the created models of the defects, where we were successfully able to distinguish between all the types of the defects except for pair click and skip, which were often mistaken due to their similar characteristics in the short segment where the defect occurs. After being trained on artificially created models of the defects the algorithm was also tested with available samples of defects recorded from real vinyl discs. Due to the small number of available samples the test results could not be considered conclusive.
