Abstract
This paper presents a special case of the design of a high voltage transformer, whose short-circuit reactance is known beforehand. A rather simple program based on the physical relations of parameters and dimensions is employed to find the optimum design of the transformer. The criterion used in the optimization is the price of used material (i.e., copper and transformer steel) and total losses in the machine. Several limitations, such as the minimum and maximum height of the magnetic core, are applied to discard impractical results. Subsequently, two variants of a high voltage source for an electrostatic precipitator are proposed and compared: a combination of a transformer and a reactor, and an individual transformer of large leakage reactance.
