This study examines the influence of inhomogeneity in bentonite on its geotechnical properties. The purpose of this study is to test this hypothesis and investigate how homogeneity affects these properties and whether this effect is positive or negative. This study further focuses on the influence of different ways of measuring the swelling pressure and examines if the behaviour of the material differs when the swelling pressure is measured on top and the bottom of the sample. Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the selected geotechnical properties of bentonite. The experiments were carried out using an oedometer with lever mechanism and a permeameter with constant gradient. To examine the influence of different measuring techniques of swelling pressure on the bentonite sample a new measuring apparatus was constructed allowing for a multi-point measurement of swelling pressure. Drawing from experience with this prototype the presented study proposed a new device for multi-point measuring. Czech bentonite BVC (Bentonit Černý Vrch) was used in the study. This material is a commercial product of Keramost, a. s. In the experimental part of this study two type of bentonite BCV were examined. Fine-grained bentonite BCV from 2017 was used as the homogeneous sample. As the inhomogeneous sample bentonite grit from 2018 was used. The results indicated that inhomogeneous bentonite did not have any significant effects on the swelling pressure for the given dry density. Lower hydraulic conductivity was generally found in the homogeneous sample. The results for the homogeneous sample indicated that the material did not behave in line with the study’s hypothesis. Detailed results are discussed and evaluated in the conclusion of the present study.
