The thesis is concerned with mathematical model of the performance of a Selective Catalytic Reduction device used in passenger cars with diesel engines for the reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in exhaust gases. Improvements in SCR efficiency are needed due to the evolution of the EU legislation regulating exhaust emissions from on-road vehicles. The goal of the thesis is to improve the existing 0-D mathematical/computational model of the SCR catalyst. Two approaches will be considered. One is an extension of the 0-D model into a pseudo 1-D model. The other is a neural network based approach. Both models will be explored in terms of their strengths and weaknesses considering their accuracy and the complexity of their implementation.
