The study deals with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)?the principles and physical background of this medical imaging technique. The aim of this study is to create an overview of the modern MRI methods suitable for neurological examinations. The registered functional magnetic resonance (fMR), the diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) and the diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) belong to these modern MRI techniques. The physical and technical principles and the application of these techniques in the clinical practice are described. An experimental measurement of DWI was conduced on SISCO 85/310 magnetic resonance imaging system. Next, this method was tested on the MRI systems in Faculty Hospital in Motol and in Masaryk's Hospital in Ústí nad Labem. A suitability of the method for the detection of ischemia was studied.
