The thesis presents the theory of axisymmetric slabs with variable thickness, with or without the influence of shear deformation, for small deflections, and the theory of axisymmetric membranes with constant and variable thickness for very large deflections. These theories are then applied on examples of self-weight deflection of optical lenses and deflection of a pressure actuated membrane liquid lens by means of various numerical methods. Furthermore, the problem of optimization of the membrane thickness to get the prescribed deformed shape after applying constant pressure is discussed. In the last part of this thesis, the results of numerical calculation of the constant thickness membrane deflection are compared with experimentally measured values on a real specimen.
