In the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) the audience often has little to see. Projected scoreboards present limited information, ICPCLive coverage focuses on the leaders, often cannot present fine detail on teams and problems, and must keep its singular focus moving to cover a variety of topics. In addition, these channels do not support audience engagement. We developed application called MyICPC that applies second screen technologies to ICPC contest, where audience members utilize portable, networked devices to access customized information about contestants, problems, and detailed contest status. The audience may then provide feedback and interactive conversation related to the event in the form of social media. We further expand this idea of engagement beyond the actual contest to enable a second screen experience for the entire event. MyICPC encourages participants to share their experience over social media even before they travel to the event through various activities and games (e.g., Quest). MyICPC then aggregates this social engagement in a timeline that unifies multiple social channels and official media production. By disseminating detailed information, allowing users to customize information use, encouraging users to engage through social media, and aggregating such engagement, MyICPC fosters community for direct participants and the global organization.
