Death in the case of avalanche is most often due to asphyxia. For this reason, experiments simulating avalanche burial have been conducted to investigate the various variables affecting the time before this critical condition occurs. During these experiments, a specially designed breathing apparatus is often used, which is at risk of leaking, or the probands inhaling outside this apparatus. This bachelor thesis focuses on the development and testing of an algorithm that identifies breaths in the data from these experiments. The developed algorithm was used to analyze data from three simulated avalanche experiments. The analysis was performed in MATLAB software and compared with the analysis performed by an expert. The analysis was focused on the detection of leaks and inhalations in the exhalation and inspiration curves of CO2 (carbon dioxide) and O2 (oxygen) and then compared with the concentration curve of N2O (nitrous oxide) gas, which served as a control gas for the detection of inhalations of the measured subjects. In experimental measurements in which N2O data were not available, analysis was performed only in the CO2 and O2 curves. After the analysis, it was found that the algorithm labeled the breaths with a success rate of 89.47%.
