The work deals with the estimation of energy expenditure using wearables. First, the current state of the art is outlined, reference methods for measuring energy expenditure and methods for estimating energy expenditure based on wearables are described. It is hypothesized that energy expenditure estimation using wearables can be further refined using a suitable set of sensors and a personalized model created using neural network. A set of two experiments is performed on a total of 20 probands and more than 50 hours of data are measured. The experiments are carried out using the FlexiGuard system, which measures heart rate, individual RR intervals and movement activity in several parts of the body. The indirect calorimetry method using the Oxycon Mobile device is used as a reference method. Energy expenditure estimation based on a set of FlexiGuard system sensors and neural network is compared to the old but still widely used method of estimating energy expenditure from heart rate alone. It is clear from the comparison of the individual graphs of energy expenditure estimation and from the comparison of their relative errors compared to the reference method that the new method offers a significantly more accurate estimating of energy expenditure. The data are further evaluated using statistical methods. Relative errors and their variances are compared with a two-sample unpaired tests. In all tests, the new method comes out as statistically significantly more accurate, mostly at high significance levels of at least 99%. At the same time, for all probands, the estimation of the total work performed during the experiment with the new method was closer to the reference value than with the old method based only on heart rate. The average relative error of the old method in determining the total work performed from the measured data is 54.8 ± 30.5 %, while the newly investigated method shows an average error rate of only 5 ± 12.8 %. At the end, the results are discussed and the expressed hypothesis is successfully verified.
