This thesis examines the effect mental stress has on the heart rate variability (HRV) of phobic patients. In the theoretical section, the concept of stress and stress response are explained as well as the methods used to measure their physiological expressions. Also, the concept of phobia is explained, with an emphasis on animal phobias which is the main focus of the thesis. The heart activity, including heart rate, is described and the methods used to analyse HRV are explained, including the parameters used. In the practical part, ECG signals taken from phobic patients afraid of snakes or spiders are processed. From these signals, the HRV parameters are obtained and then evaluated. Parameters SD2/SD1, LF/HF, SD2, LF, pNN50 or HR seem to be potentially useful for stress detection in phobic patients.
