The problem of adhesion between aggregate and bituminous binder, as well as the closely related aspect of the durability of asphalt mixtures, verified by its resistance to the effects of climatic conditions, e.g., the effect of water immersion or water and frost impact, remains one of the longest and most intensively studied phenomena of asphalt mixtures. At the present time, there is a number of laboratory procedures that simulate real conditions of the asphalt layers in a pavement construction in a very simplified manner, giving us some idea of the behaviour of asphalt mixtures. For better understanding, it is necessary to include the factors of long-term effect, temperature stability, ageing, chemical stability, etc. We are not yet able to describe and confidently reconfirm all the phenomena and effects influencing the actual adhesion as well as we cannot provide sufficient information in the case of ageing of bituminous binder and asphalt mixtures. The actual issue has both physical-mechanical and chemical dimensions. There is an endeavour to continue with the development of test procedures established to date for assessing the durability of asphalt mixtures under laboratory conditions, which would simulate ageing and the negative effects of water and frost, and which would ultimately correspond to the real conditions of the asphalt layer in the road construction. In this context, there is also an effort to eliminate the considerable dependence of the results on subjective evaluation that the actual testing and assessment of adhesion between bituminous binder and aggregate delivers, and thus to find a suitable methodology using, if possible, simple test procedures to verify the long-term effectiveness of the adhesion promoters (additives), and therefore the required durability of the asphalt mixture.
