The thesis is dedicated to determining the adverse effects of low-pH beverages containing sugar on the micromechanical properties of human enamel. The analysis is carried out by means of nanoindentation and microscopy of atomic forces which enable a detalied analysis of the microstructure of dental tissues. The aim of the thesis is to determine the mechanical properties, namely hardness and indentation modulus, their change under the exposure of beverages and subsequent analysis of the contamined area. Also, the work observes the change in enamel wall thickness as enamel protects dentin and the densely innervated dental pulp. As the thickness of enamel reduces, various cracks may form. With the development of cracks comes the possiblity of infection and dental caries, both of which are common causes for tooth extraction.
