Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive monitoring technique used to monitor pulmonary ventilation and perfusion. The first main objective of this bachelor thesis is to construct a functional phantom of thorax and analyze the calibration capabilities of the PulmoVista 500 EIT system. For the evaluation it was necessary to obtain data from a pilot measurement. The second main objective is to design an algorithm for visual assessment of fluid balance changes and test it on data from a pilot measurement and an animal experiment. After calibrating the system through the constructed phantom of thorax, the same baseline impedance can be maintained. This finding can be used to assess changes in the relative impedance, and hence changes in fluid balance, as part of long-term monitoring of lung ventilation. The developed algorithm, which uses phase images to show the differences in phase between the ventilation and perfusion components of the EIT signal, can also be used to assess changes in fluid balance. The main limitation of the work is the minimal knowledge of the calibration process of the PulmoVista 500 EIT system. This bachelor thesis can be the basis for a study that will more thoroughly investigate the issue of assessing fluid balance changes in clinical practice.
