The subject of this thesis is to present the importance of examination room lighting in the work of optometrists, especially in the examination of visual functions. Lighting has an effect not only on the psychological state of a person, but also on his health and visual well-being. In terms of vision, lighting has the greatest effect on visual acuity and colour vision, which may be most evident during their examination. The introductory chapter of the theoretical part of the thesis is devoted to the anatomy of the eye and the accessory organs of the eye, and a separate chapter is then devoted to the anatomy of the retina. The next chapter deals with light, photometric quantities, light sources and types of illumination. One of the chapters is also a summary of legislative regulations and requirements for workplace lighting. The following chapters focus on refractive errors of the eye - hypermetropia and myopia (spherical defects), astigmatism (aspheric defect) and presbyopia, and their respective examination methods, which are divided into objective and subjective refraction. The last chapter focuses on the effect of lighting on visual acuity and colour perception. The experimental part of the thesis is devoted to the measurement of subjective near refraction under prescribed lighting conditions and then under degraded conditions. For the examination, reading charts were made with texts in different colours encountered in everyday life. At the end two hypotheses will be tested: hypothesis H1: Impaired lighting affects near vision especially in presbyopic patients and hypothesis H2: Reading charts made on a white background with black text are better readable even in impaired lighting conditions.
