This master thesis deals with solderability issues of lead-free solder alloys. The first part contains a short literature review on lead-free soldering with a focus on wave soldering, followed by explanations of physical principles of wettability and surface tension measurement. In addition, this part summarizes frequent defects occurring in the solder joints created by wave soldering technology. The last part of the literature overview brings a summary of testing methods used for the soldering process quality evaluation. The goal of the experimental part of this work was to design a new methodology for solderability measurement of plated through holes (vias) connecting different layers of the printed circuit board and enabling mounting of through-hole devices. For the realization, the wetting balance test was used. The design of this experiment as well as mistakes to avoid are also described in this thesis. The introduced methodology can be further used for a solderability evaluation of vias in through-hole technology. Subsequently, the presented procedure was used for the measurement, which shows the effect of a solder bath temperature, a diameter of through-hole, and used flux on the evaluated parameters such as zero-cross time, non-wetting time, maximum wetting force, a height of capillary rise of the solder and others.
